Training Outsourcing
Learning Industry Intelligence
Each year, General Physics Corporation (GP) undertakes an in-depth market research
study on a key issue within the learning industry. Usually performed in partnership
with a third-party expert such as
Training Industry, Inc.,
these research studies deliver insight into best practices, emerging trends, and
other opportunities vital to training outsourcing.
GP is dedicated to advancing the industry through the thought leadership of our
experts, the innovation of our professionals, and studies like these. We invite
you to download one of our market research studies and use the learning intelligence
you find within it to inspire even greater innovation and client service in your

Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)
Throughout the training industry, VILT is quickly growing in popularity and use.
In March 2010, GP partnered with Training Industry, Inc., to learn more about this
revolutionary trend and published our findings in a study entitled
Delivering Virtual Instructor-Led Training (429KB PDF).
Of the 114 learning professionals surveyed, the vast majority said they were increasing
their use of VILT in their business, primarily to reduce travel time and reach more
people more efficiently. However, 80 percent of respondents who use VILT do not
think their companies are “very effective” at using it. What reasons
do they give for the lack of effectiveness? And how are the “very effective”
companies using it successfully? To learn more:
Training Outsourcing Best Practices
In January 2009, GP partnered with Training Industry, Inc., to identify best practices
in achieving strong alignment between client organizations and training providers.
The result is a study entitled
Best Practices in Working with Learning Service Providers
(328KB PDF).
To conduct this research, we interviewed 68 professionals representing a broad spectrum
of industries and company sizes. All were in the position of monitoring or overseeing
their organizations’ relationships with learning service providers. They indicated
that, while 74 percent of engagements begin with strong alignment, less than half
maintain that alignment throughout the engagement’s lifecycle.
What are the root causes of this drop-off in alignment? And which practices best
contribute to maintaining strong alignment throughout an engagement? To find out,
